When the United Nations declared the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024–2033), Serbia was one of the initiating countries behind that resolution. This week, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, the first Global Conference of the Decade brought that commitment into action and BIO4 Campus was in the room.

A decade in motion

The numbers from the Decade's first two years are significant: 396 initiatives from 79 countries, $50 million in confirmed funding mobilized, and a portfolio touching all 17 Sustainable Development Goals  making this the fastest operationalization of any UN Decade of comparable scope.

But beyond the numbers, what stood out was the urgency in the room. Science systems need reform. Research cannot be measured by publication counts alone. Academic freedom is declining. Emerging technologies are moving faster than governance. These are not abstract concerns they are the challenges that BIO4 Campus was built to help address.

Serbia's model as a response

Serbia's bioeconomy model, rooted in biotechnology, biomedicine, biodiversity, and bioinformatics, is precisely the kind of knowledge-based, impact-driven science the Decade is calling for. BIO4 Campus represents a concrete national response to the structural challenges discussed in Paris  building an ecosystem where research excellence, institutional collaboration, and real-world impact reinforce one another.

BIO4 Campus came to Paris not as an observer, but as part of a community that helped put science for sustainable development on the global agenda. The work continues.
