BIO4 Campus hosted the inaugural BIO4AI Hackathon at the Metropol Palace Hotel on June 9 and 10, as part of the Belgrade Bioinformatics Conference BelBi 2026. The event was built around a question central to where the field is heading: how can bioinformatics and AI be most effectively integrated into biodiversity, biotechnology, and biomedicine?

Three tracks, one shared challenge

Teams worked across three tracks: biodiversity, biotechnology, and biomedicine, mirroring the breadth of what BIO4 Campus is built to support. The format was deliberately demanding. The goal was not a finished product, but a strong concept, prototype, workflow, or early demo that showed clearly and credibly how bioinformatics and AI can create real value in the life sciences.

Throughout, teams were supported by mentors with expertise across AI and bioinformatics, who helped sharpen the scientific and technical direction of each project rather than provide ready-made solutions.

What the hackathon revealed

What stood out was not any single demo. It was the speed at which young researchers from different disciplines formed a shared language and turned a rough idea into something defensible in two short working windows. That is exactly the kind of talent and collaboration BIO4 Campus exists to gather and grow.

BIO4 Campus is being built as a new European center for biotechnology and bioengineering, designed to bring together more than a thousand researchers across hundreds of laboratories. The BIO4AI Hackathon is a pointed expression of that mission: create the setting, invite the right people, give them a tough scientific problem, and see what they build.
